Many people suffer from sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, nasal congestion and acute sinusitis.  A recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association states that antibiotics do not provide any benefits when compared to placebo.  This is amazing considering that 20% of the antibiotic prescriptions written in the United States are for sinus infections.  A cold, upper-respiratory infection, coughs or sinus infections often have overlapping signs and symptoms.  Many of these problems are caused by viruses and antibiotics have no effect on viruses.  Antibiotics are used for bacterial infections, but even then, sinus infections rarely require antibiotics.

Many patients walk into our office, aware that antibiotics are often not good or effective treatment.  They express concerns about building up antibiotic resistant infections, and they ask what we can do to help alleviate symptoms and get back to work or school faster. There are 3 products that dramatically affect the above mentioned situations.  They are Fen Gre, Andrographis and Congaplex.  Many patients report that their sinuses are clear within 24 hours.  Results vary slightly between individuals, but these products are extremely effective.

Heart Disease Part 4

Chiropractors and nutritionists do not diagnose or treat heart disease. This is the job of a cardiologist.

There are many risk factors for heart disease. Some are controllable and some are not. The factors that you have control over include smoking, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, diabetes, high LDL (bad) cholesterol, low HDL (good) cholesterol, obesity, and unmanaged stress and anger. All of these things significantly increase your risk of heart disease. Factors that, unfortunately, no one has control over include your race, gender, family history of heart disease, and age.

Studies show that Caucasian males, African Americans, American Indians, and Mexican Americans are all at very high risk. The older you get, the more your chances go up. Also, post-menopausal women are at higher risk. Everyone needs to identify their own risk factors and then work with their physician to minimize their risk. Some simple things that almost everyone can do are to exercise for 30 minutes 6 days per week, and find new outlets to manage stress and anger. Also, improve your diet to include more good cholesterol, less bad cholesterol, less sugar, and more fruits and vegetables. Your diet effects your blood pressure, whether or not you have diabetes and how severe it is, and obesity.

We all have various fitness levels. Check with your doctor and verify that you are healthy enough to exercise. Many of us who are healthy enough to exercise just simply chose not to do so. Walking is generally a very safe exercise. You can start out gradually and increase the length of time you walk as time progresses. Get a walking partner or listen to music to make it more enjoyable. It can also be a great time for couples. Having a goal of doing aerobics six days a week will greatly inprove you length and quality of life. Start at whatever level is safe for you to start at and increase it by a few minutes every week. In one study I read, people with metabolic syndrome did one hour of aerobics per day and after four weeks their labs improved 58%. There is no way to avoid exercise if you want to be healthy.

There are many factors and much information to absorb about diet and nutrition. Much of what people generally believe are lies that have been carefully used to make you buy products and spend money. One thing that cannot be disputed, if you want to be healthy and live longer, stop eating junk! This includes organic junk. Organic pop tarts, chips, etc. have the same risks as non-organic except they avoid the pesticides. Sugar is also a large contributor to many health problems. White sugar, raw sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave, and high fructose corn syrup are all high-calorie, high-carbohydrate sweeteners. Some are marginally better than others but sugar is still just sugar when it relates to health.

“Saturated fat and cholesterol in the diet are not the cause of coronary heart disease. That myth is the greatest scientific deception of this century, and perhaps any century.” This quote comes from George V. Mann, M.D., professor of Medicine and Biochemistry at Vanderbilt University in 1991. There are two very interesting articles that I think everyone should read. The first is about a Harvard study yielding results to support the fact that fat in your diet is not a bad thing. The second article was written by a medical doctor who admits that 80% of what he and other doctors do is actually guesswork.

Answered Questions on Osteoporosis

After posting a three part series on osteoporosis on blog sites and newsletters and speaking before the West Marietta PowerCore team today, I have received lots of questions. I believe that all women should start taking bone health products in their teens. Standard process has a bone health kit that is both affordable and packaged for daily use. The definitive scan for bone density is a Dexascan. Almond milk is an excellent source of calcium as are broccoli, spinach, and dairy products. Many commonly sold calcium supplements are ineffective and do not help if you take them. The best calcium supplement would be calcium lactate. The second best would be calcium citrate. I do not recommend other types of calcium products. The urine test is called a bone resorption assay. This test cannot only identify individuals at risk but it can also monitor the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions and will show a problem or potential problem long before any other test. I would highly recommend this to young adult women. Genetics do play a role in osteoporosis but behavior and lifestyle are far more serious problems. There is a similar urine test to assess your propensity for breast cancer. The bone resorption assay retails for $192.00. We are offering special pricing of $116.00 through March 1st. The breast cancer risk profile is $306.00 but we will combine both tests for a cost of $225.00. Send your loved ones to use before March 1st to save the money.

Several women over the last few years have come into my office to inquire about nutritional support for their osteoporosis.  Some of them have been to a dentist that refused to work on them because the jaw bone had been severely damaged as a side effect of osteoporosis drugs.  They are sold under many brand names and one of the best articles explaining this was written by a wonderful medical doctor.   http://blog.drwhitaker.com/blog/your-definitive-guide-to-wellness-medicine/osteoporosis-drug-dangers  He is a wonderful physician who writes many articles and blogs in effort to help people.

Chiropractors and nutritionists do not diagnose or treat diseases.  What we do is offer nutritional support in lifestyle recommendations.  In our office, we have had numerous successful outcomes with natural, whole-food supplements and herbs.   The main two brands that we use are Standard Process and MediHerb.  We find that they have unparalleled quality, as well as wonderful technical support for practitioners.  The protocol recommended by Standard Process includes Cataplex B, Calcifood and Ostrophinpmg.  They also have other bone health products such as Biost and Bone Complex.  The use of these supplements and weight-bearing exercise improves patient outcomes remarkably.

Weight Loss in 2012

Its a new year and most people have had a few holiday treats. Most of us have gained a couple pounds and many of us even had some extra pounds before the holidays. Weight loss is a very popular new year’s resolution. Weight loss is not quick, fast, or easy. We all want to look slim and we want results fast but weight loss is never quick. It is a life long journey.

Exercise is the most important component. Studies have shown that exercise improves blood pressure, blood sugar, depression, flexibility, and endurance among other things. Gym memberships are all the rage after the holidays. There are some terrific deals on gym memberships and they are fine as long as you actually use the gym on a regular basis. There are also many advertisements for exercise equipment. Before you make a purchase on anything, realize how much opportunity exists for absolutely no money. If you cannot afford cardiovascular equipment, there are staircases in almost every home and business. They work just fine and cost nothing to use. Walking your dog is free and will do you both a lot of good. Most senior citizen centers, universities, churches, and other organizations have exercise classes and many of them are free.

Realistic goals:

If you are not exercising at all, have a poor diet, and are tremendously overweight, do not disappoint yourself by setting yourself up for failure. Make one or two realistic goals per week and stick with them.

The best diet drink is water. Artificial sweeteners are very bad for your health and I have found no evidence to prove that people who consume them actually lose weight because of these products. Junk food is junk food. Do not be fooled by labels that say “light”, “fat free”, “all natural”, “low-carb”, etc. For the most part these are just marketing techniques. If you smoke light cigarettes do you get light cancer? Poison ivy is all natural. Do you want it in your salad?

A realistic goal to start with could involve eating something raw at each meal. This could consist of a serving of fresh fruit at breakfast, having lettuce, onion, or tomato on sandwiches, or eating carrot sticks or any other raw vegetables.

Skin and Acne Medication Uproar

There have been several different acne medications over the years and one that has caused serious concern lately is Accutane. Accutane is made up mostly of vitamin A. This drug has a long list of negative side effects and was consequently pulled off the market. It can cause severe depression, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, hair thinning, nose bleeds, peeling skin, headaches, and even reduced bone growth. While all of these side effects are serious, the gastrointestinal problems that Accutane causes are by far the worst. Several people that have taken this drug have had to have surgeries to remove their colons or their large intestines. Once these surgeries are performed the patient can no longer have any sold foods and in the case of the colon removal, the patient would no longer be able to absorb essential nutrients. These people would have to be on a continuous supply of artificial nutrients from the duration of their lives. How long is this going to last? How many more drugs will cause devastating side effects that completely ruin or end peoples’ lives? Here at Chiropractic Wellness we offer many natural skin care alternatives. Just a few of the supplements that can help with acne and other skin conditions are Dermaco, Chaste Tree, Andrographis Complex, Cataplex F, and Thymex. Try the 100% chemical free route before subjecting your body to these drugs that could have horrid side effects. We do not diagnose or treat skin diseases. We offer nutritional support to help your body heal itself.

Avastin and Breast Cancer

We do not diagnose or treat breast cancer or any other type of cancer.

According to recent statistics, about 1 in 8 American women will develop a serious form of breast cancer at some point during their lives. That totals to 12%. According to the American Cancer Societies’ website, “breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.” In 2010 there were 207,090 reported cases of serious breast cancer among women and 54,010 non-invasive cases.

Avastin is a drug that was recently pulled off the market by the FDA for use in breast cancer patients for not living up to its manufacturer’s claims and even causing harm in some cases. This drug was supposed to delay growth of metastatic tumors, however, there is no proof of this. The side effects of this drug are very serious and can even be fatal. Some of the many side effects include massive bleeding, high blood pressure, perforations in parts of the body such as the stomach and intestines, heart attack, and even heart failure. FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg says she is not satisfied that there is enough evidence of the benefits of this drug for women to be taking the risk of using the drug. Doctors still use Avastin to treat certain types of kidney, lung, brain, and colon cancers and Avastin is currently the world’s best selling cancer drug. This drug is extremely expensive and some insurance providers are refusing to cover the costs. An estimate claims that a year’s supply of Avastin could cost around $100,000.

In our office we offer Estronex (2 hydroxyestrogens: 16 hydroxyestrone) urine tests. This test will help determine your risk level for breast and estrogen sensitive cancers. If you or someone you know is interested in preventative measures, you can obtain a supplement called Cruciferous Complete from our office. All of our supplements are made directly from foods and plant parts. We also recommend that you eat the actual food. We do not diagnose or treat breast cancer. We do however offer patient education, the above mentioned test, supplements for wellness, and referrals to the appropriate medical professionals if necessary. Be sure to practice self-breast exams monthly and follow up with you medical doctor for all of the appropriate screenings.

Headaches and Migraines (click this link to see the full presentation)

There are several kinds of headaches. Some of the more common types are migraine, tension, and cluster. Many patients have a prodrome to their headache.  A prodrome is a set of symptoms or events that happens leading up to the actual event, in this case the headache. In this case, the chiropractic patient should get to their doctor as soon as possible for an adjustment.

Migraine Symptoms:
Nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, double or blurry vision, pounding or throbbing head, etc.

For migraine patients, a regular sleep schedule is important. Do not over or under sleep. Do not skip meals. Get tested for food allergies. Avoid foods with tyramine or other foods that seem to trigger headaches. Developing stress management techniques is also very helpful.

Tension headaches are more difficult to manage because external factors are not under the patient’s control. Patients with tension headaches should correct postural imbalances with spinal adjustments. Get proper advice on home and work station ergonomics. Myofascial and trigger point therapy helps a great deal.

Cluster headaches are also quite common. Just as the name implies, they occur in clusters. You may have several headaches in a brief period of time then be headache free for a while. Then another cluster of headaches followed by the headache free period, etc. To help prevent cluster headaches, avoid alcohol and smoking. Ask your healthcare provider about oxygen use. Some headaches are cervicogenic . If your headaches are caused by problems in the neck, a chiropractor may be able to help a great deal.

Some conditions that may result from pressure on or interference with the nerves

C1:  Headaches, nervousness, insomnia, head colds, high blood pressure, migraine headaches, mental conditions, nervous breakdowns, amnesia, epilepsy, chronic tiredness, and dizziness. C2:  Sinus trouble, allergies, crossed eyes, deafness, eye troubles, earache, fainting spells,  and certain cases of blindness. C3:  Neuralgia, neuritis, acne or pimples, and eczema. C4:  Hay fever, rose fever, etc., hard of hearing, adenoid infections, and post nasal drip. C5:  Laryngitis, hoarseness, and throat conditions like sore throat.

There are nutritional approaches. Feverfew, 5-HTP, Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Calcium Citrate or Calcium Lactate, Magnesium Lactate, and some B vitamins are helpful nutritional support to improve a patient with headaches.  Our office recommends the use of Antronex, Phosfood Liquid, Symplex F or M (Female or male), Calcium Lactate, Boswellia, ChelaCo, and white Peony , and Cataplex B.

Headaches can be serious and even life threatening. There is no substitute for a thorough history and exam from a licensed healthcare provider. In our office, we often refer to medical doctors and other licensed professionals when appropriate to the patients needs. We will also work in conjunction with other healthcare providers to help patients.

Wrist Complaints and Carpal Tunnel

Many patients come into our office with wrist complaints. Some of them have numbness and tingling in the palm or surface of the hand involving the thumb and first two and a half fingers. The symptoms can be more severe at night and the patient can feel clumsy and have diminished grip strength.

Common Causes

  • Repeated minor injuries
  • Overuse
  • Repetitive motions
  • Using vibrating tools
  • Computer keyboard
  • Poorly designed work stations

Factors that can contribute to wrist pain:

  • Fluid retention
  • Pregnancy
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin B Deficiency

The Chiropractic Approach

  • Thorough patient history and exam
  • Nutritional support
  • Protecting the wrist
  • Ice
  • Rest
  • Chiropractic adjustment
  • Ergonomic advice

Often, patients report improvement after having their neck adjusted. Neck subluxations can often cause problems and nerve irritation. The brachial plexus is fed by nerves that pass through the lower neck.

Wrist Adjustments

There are a couple of bones in the wrist that can be misaligned causing pressure and or pain in the median nerve.

Chiropractic Analysis

Through muscle tests we determine if and what needs to be adjusted. The lunate can cause pressure on the median nerve. The scaphiod can be misaligned and is the most often fractured bone in the wrist.

Try the conservative approach of chiropractic care before submitting yourself to surgery. Remember, once your body has been surgically altered you cannot put it back.

Foot Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Some of the many causes of foot pain:

There are many foot problems. They can involve the toes, such as a rigid big toe, toes that deviate, gout, metatarsalgia, Morton’s neuroma, stress fractures, metatarsal fractures, osteoarthritis, fat pad syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, and planter fasciitis.

There are 26 bones in the foot. Several are movable.

Plantar Fasciitis

Sharp heal pain that radiates along the bottom of the foot that is often worse in the morning when getting out of bed are classic signs of plantar fasciitis. If you notice the heal of your shoe wearing out quickly on the outside (lateral) side or the inside (medial) side, this could be the cause. Other causes can be flat feet, shin splints, high-arched feet, or heal spurs.

The Chiropractic Approach:

  • x-rays are not usually necessary
  • adjustments of the feet
  • taping the arch
  • myofascial release
  • ultrasound
  • stretching
  • orthotics

95% of people with plantar fasciitis respond to this type of approach. A tremendus addition to chiropractic care is nutritional support.

Footwear

Foot problems are made worse because of poorly designed shoes that have no support. Making sure that your shoes fit right and are designed with the right support is essential. There are shoes designed especially for people with foot, ankle, knee, hip, and low back problems.

Custom Made Orthotics

We do not recommend generic or pre-fabricated orthotics.  We also do not recommend orthotics until corrections are made in the feet. You do not want to reinforce a misaligned foot. We mold each individual’s feet and orthotics are then custom made that are very specific to each person’s needs. The foot is three dimensional and it is important to take this approach.

Common Sense

Protect your feet. Use proper footwear, rest, and ice sore feet. Before submitting to surgery, try conservative and chiropractic approaches. Once the body has been surgically altered, it cannot be reversed.
